HMRC has started sending “one-to-many” letters to individuals who may be affected by recent changes to the tax treatment of non-UK domiciled taxpayers. These letters are intended to prompt recipients to review their tax affairs in light of the updated rules. What should you understand if you receive one?

The correspondence is being issued to those HMRC considers likely to be impacted by the revised approach to taxing foreign income and gains. Now that the new regime is in place, individuals may need to revisit how their overseas income is declared and taxed. Recipients are encouraged to assess how the changes apply to their personal circumstances and take any necessary steps. This could involve reviewing existing financial arrangements or obtaining professional advice to ensure compliance with the new requirements.

While these letters are not formal enquiries, they do signal that HMRC is actively identifying taxpayers who fall within the scope of the changes. As with similar “one-to-many” communications, their purpose is to encourage early review and voluntary action. If you receive one, it should be treated as a prompt to reassess your position under the new rules rather than something to disregard. Taking action at an early stage can help reduce the risk of future complications or penalties.

If you receive a letter or if you are concerned that you may be impacted by the new rules, please contact us to discuss the situation in more detail.
